How To Take Care Of Your Model Yacht

And you thought that taking care of their model yacht was a mundane affair, which can be done by anyone? Well, now that it is clear that there is some degree of expertise required, let us see what exactly the maintenance chores include.
A model yacht needs to be protected from both internal and external damage to ensure that it stays as beautiful as when you first bought it.
Model Yacht: Possible Internal Damage
A model yacht is composed of different components. Each of these components is made up of different materials. These materials react differently with the environment and face different types of degradation. This makes it important to understand the components of the model to protect it from damage.
Metal Parts: The metal parts must be protected from rust and corrosion. This is largely done when you buy the yacht. One must ensure that the model has only brass and copper parts. Steel and iron must be especially avoided, since these metals are prone to oxidation and rust. However, there are chemical solutions available, which when applied, prevent rusting. The application needs to be done every three months or so. Also, due care must be taken to ensure that the color of the metals does not change. This can severely mar the beauty of the piece.
Wooden Parts: The wooden parts are the next most prone to degradation due to environmental influences. Wooden parts generally lose their shine and begin to wither and warp. Sunlight is said to be the Number One cause of this deterioration. Hence, you need to be cautious to check that your wooden yacht is not overly exposed to sunlight. Sometimes, the wooden polish wears off, giving the model an ugly look. In addition, dust settles on the various wooden parts. This can be cleaned off using sand paper.
Sail Cloth: A drooping and fallen sailcloth looks ugly. Hence, while buying the model, you need to ensure that the kit include some spare sailcloth. Also, if there are different colors in the kit, it helps in giving the piece a new look every few days. Ensure that the sailcloth is appropriately waxed, so that it stays up straight.
Model Yacht: Possible External Damage
Apart from internal damage, your boat can also be damaged by an accident. Although accidents are random, one can still take preventive measure to minimize loss.
Casing: There are special wooden and glass cabinets that can be purchased with the model. This protects it from accidents.
Placing At a Height: If you do not wish to buy a case, you can place the model yacht at a height to ensure that it is out of reach of children and/or pets who can damage it.
