101 Yachts: The Different Types of Yachts

A yacht is a luxury boat that is often used recreationally. Yachts are different from other boats and working ships mainly because of their leisurely purposes. They generally range from 20FT in length to up to hundreds of feet in length.

Cabin Cruiser: A luxury yacht smaller than 40FT in length.

Mega Yacht: Usually refers to any yacht bigger than 100FT in length.

Super Yacht: Usually refers to any yacht bigger than 200FT in length.

There are two different classes of yachts: sailing yachts and power yachts.

Sailing Yachts can range from about 20FT in length to over 100FT in length. Most yachts that are privately owned range between 25 and 45FT long.

Day Sailing Yachts are usually small and often called dinghies. They are designed for daily use and not for overnight trips.

Weekender Yachts are slightly larger than dinghies and are designed to take on short journeys that are about 2 or 3 days long.

Cruising Yachts are the most common private yachts and are usually 25-45FT long. These yachts are often chosen as family yachts because they have so much space and so many amenities. Some amenities include cabins, saloons, seating and equipment, and a toilet and shower room.

Luxury Sailing Yachts are usually about 82FT long or sometimes longer. These are sophisticated and luxurious boats. On the biggest luxury yachts you can find every amenity you can think of, from air conditioning to cable television.

Racing Yachts are significantly faster than the other types of yachts. Speeds of up to 35 knots could possibly be reached under extreme conditions. These yachts sacrifice comfort for speed.
