Should I Ask Him To Prom?!?!?

Soo i really want to go to my high school prom this year.. its on a yacht in san francisco.. and its supposed to be the best prom ever!.. but i havent found a date yet.. theres a really cute guy in my class.. and i had the biggest crush on him.. i dont talk to him much.. simply cause hes always with his friend and cause hes VERY quiet.. i really would love to go to prom with him but i dont know if i should..i have really low self esteem and no confidence at all!...and i dont know what he'll say.. what if hes all like" uhh no" or worse start laughing?.. i'm terrified of rejection. but it would mean so much if he was my prom date.. and to make it worse.. hes a senior.. and his friends seem to be sorta stuck up. what if i ask and then he says no and tells his friends then his friends laugh at me?.. ahhh!! help!! =[
